Gaillardia

I love these, because we pretty much can't kill them. We try to plant native, to decrease the water we need to pour into our yard. These are so drought tolerant! And they seem to survive being trampled by kids. My high school colors were Red & Gold. I think that's another reason I'm drawn to this flower.

What a beautiful flower!! The colours are gorgeous!

I'm here to answer your question about sock yarns. The softness all depends on the fibre. I've tried Trekking, and I really liked it. It's not as soft because it has nylon in it, but that makes the sock more durable. Once they're on your feet, they feel fine. Also, they soften up a bit once you wash them in woolwash. Merino (like Koigu, Fleece Artist, Lorna's Laces) is of course softer, and if you always handwash, they should last a long while. Cotton/wool and bamboo/wool are also very soft, and great because of your climate. There is a great tutuorial from Knitty here: http://www.knitty.com/issuespring05/FEATsocks101.html. There are tons of free patterns here: http://www.knittychick.com/free_sock_patterns.htm. I learned my first sock on worsted weight yarn. It was quicker and easier to manage the fewer stitches. If you want that pattern, let me know and I can email it to you.

I'd be happy to help if you have any more questions!
Good luck!

Very pretty! I've never planted those before. Next year I'll grow some because everything here looks so pathetic due to the drought.
